HOMO CAMEROTAENSIS, THE FIRST TOURIST?
The coastline of Marina di Camerota
and Palinuro are well-known all over Europe and
overseas because the remains of "HOMO CAMEROTAENSIS"
were found in their wonderful caves. Many have doubted the
autenticity of such a discovery. Nevertheless one evidence
is undoubtful: a prebistoric man, contemporary to the Neanderthal
man, chose this place as his babitat. Some caves can be
reached only by boat, others suddenly appear in the sheer
cliffs.
According to a legend the coxswain
on Aeneas' ship, Palinuro, fell in love with Kamaraton,
a girl of goddess-like beauty but with a heart of stone,
who did not correspond the young man's love. Desperate,
Palinuro chased Kamaraton's image into the deep
sea, thus giving his name to Capo Palinuro. Then Venus
transformed transformed the girl into a desolate rock;
the one where Camerota was built. Camerota contains
some "pearls" of our culture: absolutely original
architectural structures, a traditional cuisine, clav
handwork still carried out according to old techniques,
olive and carob wood sculpture.
Where ever you look, you find traces
of the past, that show mans interest for this region since.
Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and later squires of
the Middle Age choose this part of the coast with the
interior land for important settlements. A visit to the
temples of Paestum or the archeological site of
Velia, takes us back to past times, that are part
of each of us. The medieval village of S. Severino lies
few minutes from Marina di Camerota and Palinuro
and charmes us with its atmosphere and its collocation
in a wonderful natural scenery. But every little village
that you will encounter along the stateway, will touch
you with their architectonic structure.
